Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Toy Train, also known as Nilgiri Mountain Railway Toy Train, is the key attraction of the popular hill station Ooty. Started in the year 1899, it has continued to charms its visitors with equal zest winding its way through the best of nature. The Toy Train covers a distance of total 46 km in a span of 5 hours and takes one through a truly spectacular journey filled with picturesque views en route. It was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005. Another fascinating feature of the train is that its youngest X class loco is over 50 years old and the oldest is 80 years old. Weaving amidst the forests, dark snaking tunnels, sharp bends and amid the mist and fog, the Toy Train is a spectacular trip up and down the slopes with birds and trees dancing along. As the train passes through the stunning gorge, the dancing sunlight above and dream-like drizzling makes it the experience of a lifetime. Apart from offering a beautiful journey, the uniqueness of the trip lies in the fact that the rail system is the steepest in Asia and worth a visit. The ride `starts from Mettupalayam; a small place on river Bhavani. The first 5 miles are plain, but in the next 12 miles engine pushes the coaches upwards to a height of 4363 feet. Covering Mettupalayam, Kellar, Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale and Ootacamund on its way, this is the best means to discover the pristine treasures of the Nilgiris.

Ooty Lake

Ooty Lake lies at a distance of approximately 2 km from Ooty city in the district Nilgiris. The beautiful lake is spread over an area of 65 acres, and its foundation was laid down by John Sullivan who was the collector of Coimbatore in 1824. The Lake is surrounded by Eucalyptus trees and greenery all around. One can also spot numerous streams coming out through the hills. This is a perfect place to capture for people who are genuinely interested in photography. The lake is filled with beautiful water birds with the exotic Nilgiri mountain ranges in the background. Ooty Lake is pretty fun as well activity-filled place. One can hire paddle boats, rowing boats and motor boats from the boathouse here. There is a mini train too for kids to hop on and take a quick tour of the lake. Boat races, as well as other events, are also organized here for two days in May. Since there are a lot of visitors during weekends, it is advisable to visit the lake during weekdays. The romantic song 'Dil Deewana' from Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) too was shot here along with a few scenes of Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani (2009).

Ooty Botanical Gardens

Lying on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak, the Government Botanical Garden is a splendid garden in Udhagamandalam, near Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu. Sprawled over an area of 22 hectares, the garden is divided into several sections that are trimmed beautifully to present an endearing sight. Visitors are greeted with astounding colourful natural beauty from the moment they pass through the gates. The Botanical garden in Ooty is home to many rare species of trees, chief among them being the cork tree, the only one of its kind in India. The paperbark tree, the monkey puzzle tree and an old fossilized tree estimated to be 20 million years old round out the other rare species. The monkey puzzle tree has been named so because even monkeys fail to climb it. In addition to these, a number of exotic and indigenous vegetation of plants, shrubs, ferns, trees, herbal and bonsai plants are found here as well.

A town Panchayat city and a picturesque hill station in the Nilgiris in the state of Tamil Nadu, Kotagiri is famous for its sprawling tea plantations. It is located at an altitude of 1,985 m above sea level and is the third largest hill station in the Nilgiri hills after Ooty and Coonoor. It is an ideal place for some trekking expeditions leading into the Nilgiris. Schools are a significant contributor to the local economy of Kotagiri. The expensive residential schools are a feature of the Nilgiris and Coonoor. Modelled initially as British boarding schools, these have now become comprehensive schools based on the Indian schooling systems. With the development of infrastructure and roads, the importance of this gorgeous hill station declined; as before the Ghat Road was built, every traveller travelling to Ooty had to cross Kotagiri as well. Pykara Lake

Pykara is a popular getaway that is at a distance of about 20 kilometres from Ooty, in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India. The Pykara village, along with a beautiful river by the same name, also houses a dam and a power plant. Because of the construction of the dam, the backwaters have formed an enormous lake, which is now known as the Pykara Lake and has become a significant tourist attraction that is visited by large numbers of people all year round. It has everything that a person on vacation can ask for, right from ambience and comfort to scenic beauty. Nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers should definitely not miss out on this unique and fun-filled place. The Pykara is the largest river in the district and is revered by the Todas, who consider it to be sacred. The river originates from the Mukurthi peak and then navigates through the hilly terrain to reach the edge of the plateau, where it falls delightfully in a succession of breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls. The last two waterfalls are known as the Pyakara Falls and fall from the heights of 55 metres and 61 metres. The marvellous lake is just 2 kilometres away from these waterfalls. Kamraj Sagar Lake

Kamraj sagar lake is a dam and is located in the suburbs of Ooty. It is located far away at a distance between the woodlands and thus make an amazing picnic spot. Annamalai Temple

A not so famous destination for traveller's list is Annamalai temple which is situated 20 km away from Ooty on the outskirts of Coonoor. The temple is built in dedication of Lord Murugan and now is known as the 7th Hill House of the Lord. It is a lesser known attraction for people not belonging to Coonoor. The locals perform poojas here, and an aged man runs a small ashram beside it. The lush green grasslands above the hills add seven stars to its glory. Hence, the temple lands on one of the most picturesque locations. Guru Krishnanandaji founded this temple. The devotees irrespective of their caste, religion, or nationality perform the ritual of 'Anna-Dana' for the people who visit the temple during Nakshatra or Karthigai days every month. More than a hundred people take part in this kind cause of distributing food. The Annamalai Temple sees itself in the village of Onikandy. Moreover, placed within the green tea estates and silver oak trees, the scenery it has is indeed a treat to every visitor's eye. Droog Fort, Coonoor

Droog Fort is located in the area surrounding Coonoor. A trekkers delight, one must undertake some by foot traveling to reach this destination. This old and worn out fort is located 6,000 ft above the plains. Today, only a wall remains of this military outpost. Tradition says that this fort was used by Tippu Sultan as an outpost. With such an impressive location that allowed the fort to command extraordinary views in all proclivities,its is not a thing to ponder upon as to how this was chosen as an outpost.In order to get to this site, you must travel through the Nonsuch Tea Estate. Droog Fort is also referred to as Bakasura Malai. This name links it to the legend of a local demon, Bakasura.

Doddabetta Peak

Towering at a staggering height of 8650 feet or 2,623 meters above the sea level, Dodabetta, which literally translates into 'big hill' is the highest peak in the Nilgiri Hills. It actually stays in the suburbs of Ooty and is hardly 10 km from the place. A treat to the eyes, this picturesque land is indeed a great sightseeing place. It is a wonderful place for shooting and capturing nature's scenic beauty in the camera and making all your fellow mates back at home turn green with jealousy. The hilly regions of Mysore and the open plain lands too can be easily captured in the camera and it is the best place to take a shot. The summit offers an astounding view of the nearby areas which are covered with dense forests. Upper Bhavani Lake

The Upper Bhavani Lake is a mesmerising and breathtaking lake that is located above the Avalanche Area in the Nilgiri Hills in Udhagamandalam, (also known as Ooty), in Tamil Nadu. This beautiful lake, which was previously ignored and consequently unexplored, is now gaining some popularity and credit for its charming beauty and picturesque scenes. Prior permission by the Forest Department is required to enter the area, along with details of the number of the car and the people who are coming into this zone. The journey to the Upper Bhavani Lake from Ooty is a long car ride, followed by a trip in a bus/jeep and provides the tourists with spectacular views of famous attractions such as Avalanche Hydel Power, Cauliflower Forest, Bhavani Amman Temple and the Upper Bhavani backwaters. Tourists can also spot numerous animals and birds like peacocks and tigers on the way. Even though no one is allowed to touch the water of this pristine lake, the view in itself is worth it. St Stephen's Church

The St. Stephen's Church in Ooty is indeed a marvellous and breathtaking architectural marvel that the British left for us after they finally gave us our independence. Located on the road to Mysore in Ooty, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the St. Stephen's Church is one of the earliest churches that you will find in the Nilgiris district. The structure dates back to the 19th century and was built by the British government. The date of the commencement of construction was cleverly chosen to coincide with the birthday of King George IV. The fabulous pale-yellow building of the St Stephen’s Church bears testimony to the marvels of British architecture that existed during those times. This grandeur is also reflected in the painting of 'The Last Supper' that can be found in the Church. The foundation of the church was laid down by Stephen Rumbold Lushington, the Governor of Madras, on April 23, 1829. Captain John James Underwood was in charge of the construction and designing of the entire church, and he ensured that only high-quality wood was used for the building of the St Stephen's Church. It would be interesting to note that the timber that was used in the construction process was brought from Tipu Sultan's palace after the British had successfully defeated him. Various attractions that appeal to visitors and tourists in the church include pretty stained glass windows that depict a myriad of different scenes, such as Mother Mary holding Jesus in her arms; the exquisite wooden architecture and the painting of The Last Supper. Ketti Valley View

Ketti Valley View Point is a popular vantage point situated on Ooty - Coonoor Road in Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu. It is one the most beautiful sightseeing places in Ooty and also one of the top places to experince Ooty Tourism. As the name suggests, the view point provides a panoramic view of the Ketti Valley, the largest valley in the Nilgiris, and its beautiful surroundings. Ketti Valley is home to several tribes, such as Todas and Badagas. There are over 14 villages in this valley that belong to the tribes of Badagas. These tribal people are experts in cultivating fresh vegetables and fruits in the valley. Also known as Switzerland of Nilgiris, the Ketti Valley is a heaven for nature lovers and photographers. The view of Ketti from the viewpoint is majestic and often compared to views of Switzerland. Nature lovers, adventurists, experience seekers and even casual Traveller will love the view from this viewpoint. There is also a telescope room to get a closer view of the valley and surroundings. This valley also houses a popular brand of the needle making industry, known as Pony Needles. There is not much to see in the valley apart from indulging in the pleasant atmosphere of Ketti Valley.

Thunder World

Located in the North Lake Road near the bus stand in Ooty, Thunder World is a kid amusement park, water park and a dinosaur attraction zone. It offers a plethora of fun activities for the kids as well as the adults including Big Foot, Rain Forest, Haunted House, 5D theatre etc. The amusement park also has a cafeteria which serves snacks and drinks.

Elk Hill Murugan Temple

Perched atop the Elk Hill, Elk Hill Murugan Temple is Hindu revered temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. Besides the picturesque panoramic view of the valley below, the hill is also replete with rich wildlife which provides the devotees an ideal spot for meditation. Boasting of striking architecture, the temple also has deities of Ganesha, Shiva, Shakthi etc.

Adam's Fountain

Adam's fountain is established in the year 1886 and it is loacted in the entrance of Charring cross, Ooty. It was built in the memorial to a Governer who was popular during that time or tenure. As the fountain is located in one of the most important and beautiful places in Ooty, it is an important tourist landmark in the Ooty town. It will be very delightful to watch it during the night time.

Kandal Cross Shrine

Situated on the outskirts of Ooty, Kandal Cross Shrine is a beautiful church popularly known as the Jerusalem of the East. The church houses a life size bronze crucifix and a relic in a small glass case which is believed to be from the original cross that Christ carried. Sacred prayers are offered every Friday.

Wax Museum

Housed within a 130 years old ancient manor in Ooty, Wax Museum is a popular tourist spot in the city. Abdul Kalam etc. It also has wax replicas of traditional Indian villages, rural landscape etc.

Stone House

Stone House was the first bungalow built in Ooty by John Sullivan when he bought one acre land for INR 1. Originally it was called Kal Bangla by tribal people, •kalê meaning •stoneê. Currently, it is the residence of the Principal of Government Arts College, Ooty.

Government Museum
