Marine Drive is a km long, arc shaped boulevard along the South Mumbai coast, starting from the southern end of Nariman Point and ending at the famous Chowpatty beach. Gateway of India

The Gateway of India is, without doubt, one of the most popular tourist hotspots of Mumbai. It is located at Apollo Bunder Waterfront and overlooks the Arabian Sea in the most beautiful way. One of the most distinguished monuments in Mumbai, it was built in the year 1924 by famous architect George Wittet as a commemoration of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. The imposing structure of the monument is a beautiful confluence of Indian, Arabic and Western architecture and has become a popular tourist hub in the city. Nicknamed 'Mumbai's Taj Mahal', the foundation of this landmark was laid in 1911 and was inaugurated 13 years later in 1924. The basalt arch of the Gateway served as the entry and exit access to India through waterways before independence and was the exit point from where the last British ship left India for England. Juhu Beach

Juhu beach is the longest beach in Mumbai, and arguably the most popular among tourists as well. Juhu beach is renowned for its wide variety of street food with a very typical Mumbai flavour. Haji Ali Dargah

Situated at the backdrop of a beautiful view of the sea is the shrine of Haji Ali, a wealthy merchant turned into Muslim Sufi. The Haji Ali Dargah (mausoleum) was raised in 1431 in reminiscence of an affluent Muslim trader, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly belongings before making a trip to Mecca. People from all walks of life and religions come here to seek blessings. Built of glass, the tomb is a beautiful illustration of the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. A marble courtyard contains the central shrine. The tomb within the mosque is roofed by a brocaded red and green cloth, supported by an exquisite silver frame and marble columns. The main hall has marble pillars engraved with creative mirror work: blue, green, yellow chips of glass arranged in varied designs and Arabic patterns which spell the ninety-nine names of Allah. Siddhivinayak Temple

The Siddhivinayak Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is one of the most significant and frequented temples in Prabhadevi of Mumbai, Maharashtra. This temple was built in the year 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil. The couple did not have any children of their own and decided to build the Siddhivinayak temple so as to fulfil the wishes of other infertile women. It is one of the richest temples in Mumbai and devotees visit this temple in large numbers on a daily basis. The statue of Lord Ganesha here is believed to be self-manifested. The Siddhivinayak temple has a small sanctum housing the idol of Shri Ganesha, which is about two and a half feet wide and made out of a single piece of black stone. The trunk of the Lord tilts to the right, and a snake adorns the idol much like a thread would. The deity has four arms and is hence known as 'Chaturbhuj'. He carries a lotus in his upper right hand, a small axe in his upper left hand, a rosary in his lower left hand and a bowl full of his favourite snack 'modaks' as well. Flanked by Goddesses Riddhi and Siddhi who signify wealth and prosperity, the image of the Lord here is one that is of utmost importance to the people of faith. Popularly known as Chowpatty, the beach is located in southern Mumbai along the western railway route. Elephanta caves

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elephanta Caves is a specimen of rock-cut art and architecture from the times of medieval India. The caves are located on the Elephanta island which is situated at a distance of 11 km from the city of Mumbai. Natively known as Gharapurichi Leni, the Elephanta Caves that exist today are ruins of what were once elaborately painted artworks. It also provides an amazing view of the Mumbai skyline. There are two groups of alcoves in the site of the Elephanta Caves, the first is a large group of five Hindu caves and the second one is a smaller group of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves contain the stone sculptures representing the Shaiva Hindu sect. The architecture of the caves dates back to the 5th and 8th centuries, but the story of their origin is still a mystery. The caves are an expression of art and a number of important imageries are sculpted here, which include 'Trimurti' or three headed Shiva, 'Gangadhar' which is a manifestation of the river Ganga as she descends to the earth and 'Ardhnareshwar', which is a representation of Shiva and Parvati in the same body. In addition to being an important heritage site, the Elephanta Caves are also an unlikely trekking destination.

Sanjay Gandhi National park

Kanheri caves

Located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves in Mumbai is a group of alcoves and rock - cut monuments that illustrate the Buddhist influence on the Indian art and culture. The caves are famous for its 109 special entrances and ancient sculptures, carvings, paintings and inscriptions dating from the 1st century to the 10th century that adorn their basalt formations. Standing in sharp contrast to the verdant greenery of the surrounding hills, Kanheri Caves can be accessed through a series of rock cut steps. As you reach the main site of the caves, it is not difficult to notice the assortment of niches that exist here. The older of the Kanheri Caves are plainer in their design, while the newer caves are more ornamented. What ties the design of each of these caves are the individual stone plinths on which they rest, which is common to all. In addition to the caves, a congregation hall is also present in the premises which is embellished with intricately carved pillars and Buddhist stupas. An excellent example of ancient engineering in the Kanheri Caves is the water channels carved out stone which harnesses rainwater into cisterns to fulfil the water requirement on site. Another one of the caves here has been converted into a monastery and holds special importance for the Buddhist community. Mumbai Zoo

Formerly known as Ranichi Bagh meaning Queen's Gardens, Jijamata Udyan is the only zoo in the city of Mumbai. Its former name is a depiction of the original British name Victoria Gardens. Now it is also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, named after the mother of Shivaji, the hero of Maratha Empire. The zoo is located in the heart of the city in Byculla, in close proximity to the lower income housing colonies of Mumbai - famously called Chawls. Built in 1861, it is the only zoo of Mumbai and one of the oldest in India. In the zoo, you can witness many wild animals in separate enclosures such as lion, monkeys, crocodiles, elephants and many more. The aviary has a good collection of bright and noisy birds. Mahalaxmi temple

The Mahalaxmi Temple is one of the oldest temples situated in the city of Mumbai. Dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi or the 'Goddess of Wealth', this shrine was built sometime around the 16th - 17th century. The main presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Laxmi, while Goddess Kali and Saraswati are other two deities worshipped here. Together, the three idols are known as Mahalaxmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati. The edifice of the Mahalaxmi Temple is simple and charming in its appearance, which is an apt reflection of the very serene and calm atmosphere that prevails inside. The idols of the Tridevi Goddesses here are adorned with gold bangles, pearl necklaces and nose rings, with Mahalaxmi occupying the central position. Gorakhgad is a hill fort in Maharashtra. Gorakhgad and Machindragad are twin forts in the Thane district of Maharashtra. Gorakhgad is situated at an elevation higher than its twin fort. Mahakali caves

Alternatively known as Kondivite Caves, the centuries-old Mahakali Caves are located in the western part of the city of Mumbai, i.e. Andheri. The Mahakali Caves are a total of nineteen rock-cut monuments, built between the duration of the 1st and 6th century. The main cave consists of Buddha figures and stupas, while the there are several Buddha idols carved on the rocks too. These solid basalt caves are a favourite place for history lovers, and archaeologists. Surprisingly clean and efficiently maintained, the caves are far from the city area hence give a serene and peaceful environment to be in. Beautifully carved out of solid black basalt rock, the caves exist since the Ashokan Empire. The existence of a Buddhist Stupa indicates the dwelling of Buddhist monks here. The walls contain scriptures in Pali, a language older than Sanskrit. A majority of the caves are on a low-lying hill, rising only a few meters above the surroundings. Since the caves are carved in volcanic trap breccias, they are prone to weathering. The caves are small in size and contain numerous rock-cut cisterns. Though the images today are not clearly visible, the Mahakali caves are indeed one of the most beautiful specimens of the rock-cut monastery.

Makarandgad Trek

Makarandgad (or Madhumakarandgad) is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. Believed to be comprised of twin peaks, Madhu and Makarandgad, the fort has thus derived its name. Situated n the district of Satara, the fort rises to an elevation of 4000 feet from the ground There are freshwater cisterns and tanks of water in the fort. The top of the fort is more of a plateau than a hill, and has a Mallikarjun Mahadev temple. The way to the fort has a huge Gamdevi temple. The fortifications sre all gone, and not much remains to be seen. The dense orests of Javli surround the fort from all sides. The beautiful backwaters of Koyna and Shivsagar dams can be seen easily from the top, along with the peaks of Pratapgad and Mahabaleshwar.

Naneghat Trek

Naneghat is a hill fort in Maharashtra. It is situated at an elevation of 2600 feet from the ground in the Thane district of Maharashtra. The trek is famous more for its ancient pass than for the fort itself. Most of the fortifications have crumbled down, but some of the inscriptions on the caves still remain in praise of the rulers who built them. There are a number of water tanks and reservoirs around the place. The fort has a number of artificial caves and the famous Naneghat pass with huge rock walls on either side. There is a temple of Ganesha on the other side of the pass. A huge rock-cut pot which was used presumably to collect coins from the traders passing by. The pinnacle of the fort is shaped like a thumb and is known popularly as 'Nancha Angtha.'

Mahuli Trek

Mahuli is a hill fort in Maharashtra. Located in the district of Thane, the peak of the fort rises to an elevation of 2700 feet from the ground. The summit is actually a collection of 2-3 hills, all having typical names. Much of the fortifications are still present, and the crumbling remains of an old guesthouse can be seen, devoid of its arch though. There are cisterns of water at the top, and a number of water tanks on the way to the fort. There is a small Shiva temple atop the citadel, and a group of caves to the left of the temple. The forests surrounding the fort have been declared a sanctuary. Mahuli fort itself is now a protected monument.

Hajimalang Trek

Sri Malang gad is a fort near Kalyan in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is known popularly as Haji Malang, which is one of the most famous among the three sufi shrines located on the hill. The structure of the fort is three-storeyed, and each tier has a specific name. The lowest, Pir Machi, is a plateau upon which the famous sufi shrine is situated. The next higher level, Sone Machi, is a rock-projection and is the lower part of the fort. Upon the summit of the hill lies the citadel. The hill top has limited fortifications and not much remains of the fort are extant as well. There are some water cisterns though which are a reservoir of fresh water. Copper pipes have been installed carry the water to the lower levels. The crowd here is composed mostly of devotees who throng the sufi dargah at any time of the year. The annual urs festivities held during the month of February are a nice tourist attraction.

Jivdhan Trek

Jivdhan is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. It is a part of the 'famous five' fort in the Sahyadri mountain range. The other forts which are a part of the famous five include Naneghat, Shivneri, Chavand and Hadsar. Although the fortifications have crumbled down, there are well built water tanks atop the fort. There are large stone constructions which were used presumably as warehouses or granaries. From the top of the fort, the peaks of Harishchandragad is visible to the North-west, Hadsar to the North-East and Chavand to the East. The pinnacle is an upright block of stone, about 60 metres in height, and is known popularly as Vanderlingi. The western side of the pinnacle has an idol of goddess Jivai, who is supposed to be the patron deity of the fort.

Mahipatagad Trek

Mahipatagad is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. Mahipatagad is a twin fort of Rasalgad, located in the Ratnagiri district. The fort is famous for its six entrance door or 'Darwazas' but most of them have crumbled down. There is Shiva temple at the top by the name of Mayureshwar Mahadev, and two small ponds facing the temple. Huge heaps of lime and mortar are found at some places atop the fort. The top of the fort is occupied by dense forests for most of the part. There are tanks of water at the top as well. One can easily see the forts of Makarandgad and Pratapgad to the East and Rajgad to the West, from atop the citadel.

Jama Masjid

Just a kilometre and a half away from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Jama Masjid, popularly known as Friday Mosque, is the oldest mosque that Mumbai houses. A popular place of pilgrimage, this mosque stands majestically on the renowned Sheikh Menon Street, near Crawford Market, in the southern part of Mumbai. The mosque boasts of beautiful and intricate carvings, breathtaking artworks and the fascinating 'sangemarmar' stonework and has a fascinating history attached to it.
