Robber's Cave

Robber's cave is a river cave formed in the Himalayas about 8 kilometres from Dehradun in the north-eastern state of Uttarakhand. This river cave is very close to Sahasradhara which are the thousandfold springs in Uttarakhand. It is mostly frequented by tourists seeking the adventure of witnessing this natural formation that has river water flowing from the middle of a cave. Tourists need to trek a distance of about 1 kilometre through the Anarwala village to reach this place. It is a perfect location for those seeking adventure and thrill. Locals call it Guchhu Pani and also believe that it is home to Lord Shiva. Tourists can explore this 600 metres long cave that has been divided into two main parts. If you happen to walk a little further through the stream, you can also spot splendid waterfall. Robber's cave is basically a narrow gorge formed in the conglomerate limestone. The location is sure to make you feel you are a part of a mystery movie with its dark limestone, streams gushing into the cave and the sounds echoing inside the formation. Sahastradhara is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand and is placed in the picturesque town of Dehradun. The place exhibits true scenic beauty, where water drips from limestone stalactites, making the water Sulphur-rich and thus it is also known as Sulphur Springs. The water is fresh and sweet, and the area is a warehouse of the exquisite beauty of caves, waterfalls and steppe farming by locals. Sahastradhara is situated at about 11 km from the city of Dehradun, near the Robber's Cave. The temperature of water here is a little lower than its surroundings. Its picturesque beauty attracts a lot of Traveller from faraway places. One can even enjoy a stunning view of the surroundings while enjoying a fun ropeway ride here. These ropeways provide airy trips to these gorgeous mountain tops. Sahastradhara is located on the banks of river Badli, thus attracting a lot of Traveller that come here to explore the waterfall and caves. It takes about 2-3 hours to explore the area properly. The entrance here is free of cost. Sahastradhara has a number of water pools, which are formed as a result of dripping water from the lime Stalactites. A dip in the Sulphur-rich water here feels cold and refreshing but is believed to have remarkable medicinal advantages. The water here has a fall of around 9 meters. One of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma School in Tibet, the Mindrolling Monastery was established in 1676 by Rigzin Terdak Lingpa which was re-established in Dehradun by Khochhen Rinpoche along with a group of monks in 1965. Being an architectural masterpiece with several sections, the monastery is no less than a wonder to look at. The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy and the head office of the Indian Council of Forestry Research are also housed in its premises. FRI is an institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and was granted the status of a deemed university by UGC in the year 1991. It is one of the oldest institutes and was established to lead forestry research in India. This organisation has led to the evolution of scientific forestry not only in our country but the entire Indian Subcontinent. This prestigious institute is also responsible for training the forest officers and forest rangers of our country. This institute has been internationally acclaimed due to its developed infrastructure and various notable courses offered here. Clock tower, also known as "ghanta ghar" is a very famous tourist attraction. It was started in the year 1948 and got completed in 1953. The much respected Lal Bahadur Shastri inaugurated the monument. It was a renowned landmark of the city and was built by the British before India got its independence. The clock does not tick at present, but it is said that years ago when it was built, the peak of it was such that a person on the other end of the city could hear it as well. The clock tower is situated on the Rajpur Road and is surrounded by numerous business centers. The tower has a gold plate on top of it which has all the names of the freedom fighters who fought for the independence of the country and helped it break free from the chains of British slavery. Originally, the tower was named "Balbir tower" and was built to mark the independence of India as a sign of celebration. Sarojini Naidu, the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh, laid the base of the monument in the year 1948. It is 85m tall and has an exclusive architecture with six faces. It has been adding a lot of heritage value to the country.

There are more then 400 species of birds in the park. To enjoy wildlife jungle safari at Rajaji park visit between 15th November and 15th June. Safari timings are morning 06:00 AM to 10:00 AM is first safari & second safari time is 02:00 PM to 06:00 PM.

Lachhiwala is very well maintained as it is governed by the Forest Department of State Government. For entry visitor have to pay very nominal price (15 or 20 INR per head). The Park also owns a canteen to snacks and lunch and a forest guest house for the overnight visitors at very nominal or reasonable price but make sure to check the availability of rooms before planning to stay. Along with the mean time you can also visit the famous Temple of Lord Rama’s younger Brother named Laxman Siddh Temple.

Set up by the Britons to commemorate the bravery of Gorkha army, Khalinga War Memorial is the world's first memorial erected by an army for their opponents. This one of its kind memorials, set up on the Sahastradhara Road, was made in the honor of Gorkha Regiment after the 1814-16 war. As per the historical facts, Gorkhas defended the Kangra army from the British army for six weeks without food and water supply. Impressed by the bravery of Gorkha, the British troops built a memorial to honor them. It is a thought-provoking place, where one can see two pillars; one is dedicated to Gorkha army and other to the British army, in the middle of a lush green garden. The impressive construction stands on the grounds of the battle where the battle was fought. From the memorial, one can see the panoramic view of Kangra fort.
