Bhimtal Lake, one of the most famous lakes in India, is located in the Bhimtal town of the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. An island at the centre of the Lake is a famous tourist attraction and also houses an aquarium with a variety of fish species and a temple. In the Kumaon region, which is also known as the Lake district of India, the Bhimtal lake is the largest lake and supplies drinking water to the town and supports aquaculture in the region. Today, the lake has been opened for tourists and has a variety of activities in and around the lake. Morning walks are especially recommended for those who want to avoid the tourist crowd. The tranquil atmosphere of the lake is sure to make you want to come back again and again. The Bhimtal Lake is located at an elevation of over 4500 feet, in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. It is a 'C' shaped lake that expands over an area of 47 hectares. During some months in a year, the otherwise clear lake water turns brown due to infused animalcule. Locals believe that only after the lake claims a victim does the brown colour disappears, and the water becomes clear again. The surroundings of the Bhimtal Lake are well maintained and clean offering a pleasant experience to everyone visiting it. Once a place for a restaurant, today this island houses an aquarium created by the Nainital Lake Development Authority. Victoria Dam, one of the most breathtaking sights in Bhimtal is located on the bank of Bhimtal Lake. The most attractive thing about this dam is the flower gardens on its either side that makes the place look quite entrancing. This 40 ft high dam attracts tourists in large number and one can also go for a stroll in the forest that bounds the lake.

A beautiful hill, located just 5 km from Bhimtal gets its name from the Hidimba, wife of Bhima of Mahabharata. This hill also houses a wildlife asylum called Vankhandi Ashram, a habitat developed by Vankhnadi Maharaj, an environmentalist and monk who lives there.
Situated on the embankment of Bhimtal Lake, Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Believed to be already in existence during the visit of Pandavas while on exile, today it is often flooded with visitors. With spectacular backdrop and peaceful surroundings, this place is a must visit.

Nal Damyanti is a small natural lake which is situated at a distance of 2 km from Bhimtal. It contains shallow waters and is a perfect spot for enjoying the natural beauty around. You can also go on a nature walk and admire the fascinating surroundings of the place. Though the trek route for reaching the place is tattered, the amazing scenery around will make up for it. There are several old houses showcasing traditional Kumaoni architecture present here. As you move ahead on the trek, you will also come to a cluster of seven lakes known as Sat Tal. Nal Damyanti Lake is a holy place which has a deep admiration of the locals. The lake has been named after the famous mythological characters namely King Nala and his wife, Damayanti. With the region offering fine cuisines and opportunities for exploring the tourist attractions across the city, the lake provides an experience which is both authentic and unique in itself. A visit to the Nal Damyanti Tal is likely to give you a deeper insight into the cultures and traditions of the Bhimtal city. Karkotaka Temple is located on the top of the hill by the same name and is flocked by devotes throughout the year. Devoted to the serpent god, Nag Karkotaka Maharaja, pilgrims come here in large numbers on the occasion of Rishi Panchami. The myth behind this temple is that the serpent god protects the villagers from the snakes.
It is a cluster of many small shops offers varied products and plethora of handicrafts items, candles, paintings, statues and shawls to buy. Running parallel to the Lake, the Mall Road is the heart of Nainital. It doubles as a shopping district and trade centre and has plenty of cafes, restaurants and hotels which travellers can frequent.
